What is hypnosis and is it safe?

Hypnosis is a natural safe state of mind that you spontaneously experience many times a day. For instance, you are in hypnosis when:

  • You find yourself day dreaming.
  • You are driving on a highway and you find yourself so focused in something in your mind that you missed your exit.
  • You are watching a movie and are crying or getting scared or having any kind of emotions related to it.
  • You are looking for an object which is within your sight reach but you can not see it.

Hypnosis is safe, over 200 years of experience in the Western World and there has been no cases of someone hurt by hypnosis. The American Medical Association accepted and recognized hypnosis in 1958.

All Hypnosis is fundamentally Self-Hypnosis.  Hypnosis is defined as a state of heightened suggestibility and you must be willing to follow the suggestions or there is no so-called trance state. Only you decide when you go in hypnosis and no one has the power hypnotize you against your will!

Your hypnotist is simply a guide who helps you use these human abilities to make the kind of changes that you want. For example, breaking bad habits, such as procrastination, overeating, smoking, etc...

What is a hypnosis session like?

Your hypnosis session is confidential. It is a time for you to use the training of your hypnotist to enable you to make some dramatic changes in your life.

First, you will learn about hypnosis. Most of your first session is educational, you will get to understand how you will be using hypnosis and how your subconscious mind operates. It has been demonstrated that when people know more about hypnosis they tend to do better in the hypnotherapeutic process.

After all your questions about hypnosis have been answered, then and only then will you be guided into a state of hypnotic relaxation, where you will begin the process that will help you to rapidly achieve your desired results. After you emerge from hypnosis, you will spend some time talking about your experience.

Before you leave your next appointment should be scheduled with your hypnotist. It is recommended that the sessions be spaced no more than a week or so apart. Here at New Horizon, we use a short term hypnosis approach, so sessions usually run from two to six, depending on the issue at hand.

What are some of the myths about hypnosis?

A hypnotist has magical powers: This is completely false. A hypnotist is an ordinary human being.

You can be hypnotized and do things against your will: Absolutely false. Nobody can be hypnotized against their will. You must be 100% cooperative in order to be hypnotized. Under Hypnosis you can choose to accept or reject any suggestions given to you by the hypnotist.

Only weak minded people can be hypnotized: False. The opposite is the truth. The more intelligent you are the easier is to hypnotize you. In certain cases of mental debility, hypnosis is impossible. You can be hypnotized if you want to.

Under hypnosis you are unconscious: Not true at all. Under Hypnosis you are awake and completely aware.

You can get stuck in Hypnosis: Completely false. Even if the hypnotist dropped dead after putting you in deep Hypnosis, you will either open your eyes after not hearing his voice for a while or you will slip into a brief sleep and awaken normally.
